About Karly:

I’m an applied insect ecologist currently working as a postdoctoral associate for Brian Nault’s vegetable entomology program at Cornell AgriTech. Originally from Massachusetts, I completed an M.S. degree at South Dakota State University studying the effects of neonicotinoid seed treatments on pests and predators in soybean production. For my Ph.D. at Penn State University, I studied the effects of incorporating cover crops and reducing tillage on pest management and conservation biological control in organic corn production. At Cornell, I’m researching methods to improve IPM programs in commercial onion production across Western and Central NY. One project focuses on the potential to reduce inputs, including fertilizer and insecticide, in New York onion production. We’re evaluating the response of onion thrips, onion yield, and bulb rots affecting marketability of onions to reduced rates of fertilizer in combination with action threshold-based insecticide programs. Another project is investigating the potential to incorporate entomopathogenic and endophytic fungi into onion crop production to reduce damage from onion thrips and onion maggot. I love spending as much of my work day in the field as possible and finding solutions to grower-driven issues in agriculture. In addition to applied research, I am passionate about effective science communication and improving the use of science in policy- and decision-making. My career aspirations are to work in a position, such as cooperative extension, where I can find solutions to real-world problems in agriculture and help translate and disseminate relevant scientific information to the stakeholders who can benefit from it.
